Today's topic is:-

Operations on Sets!

1. Union

Union of 2 sets is the set of all the elements in those sets.

Example. A = {1,2}

B = {2,3}

A U B = {1,2,3}

2. Intersection

Set of all common elements in 2 sets.

Example.  A = {1,2}
                  B =  {2,3}
                  A⋂B = {2}

3. Complement

It is the set of all elements which are in universal set but are not in set A.

Example. A = set of even no.
                 A' = set of odd no.

4. Difference
A-B is the set of all elements that are in A but not in B

Example. A ={1,2}

                 B= {2,3}

                 A-B = {1}

# Special Set

Disjoint Sets

Sets with no common elements.

In this case,

A⋂B = Φ

Example.A={1,2} and B={3,4}

Practice!

Q. Find the union, intersection and the difference (A - B) of the following pairs of sets:-

A = The set of all letters of the word FEAST 

B = The set of all letters of the word TASTE

Solution

• A U B = {F,E,A,S,T}
• A⋂B = {E,S,T,A}
• A-B= { F }
