Engineering Science and its Opportunities

Engineers have always known to be problem solvers. They always find a way out of things, and see ways that no one else can see. They have an eye that catches things invisible to the normal eye. This is probably why engineers have been able to build and innovate a lot of the innovations in today’s world wherein we can live a smoother life. Engineers learn Sciences which are vital to solve real-world problems. So, basically engineering is the application of the scientific principles which have been proven and using them to solve real-world problems.

Although all engineering fields deal with sciences, Engineering Sciences have a much broader and wider area and allows you to explore broader areas. You can literally get into any area or field with an Engineering Science degree - from aerospace or medical field to even agriculture and farming. With engineers specializing with engineering sciences, they try to create solutions and are often successful. Engineering Sciences might just be the answer to solving all problems in the world right now!

Career Options

A lot of you might be wondering in an interview will a person who specializes in Engineering Sciences be considered or a person who specifically specialized in that particular area. The answer might surprise you! Most companies would prefer the person with the engineering sciences degree because they have a broader base and their degree is more than enough to show their interest in learning new things. Engineering Sciences cover a huge area - for example, if you want to work in a furnace making related company, usually people specialize in a chemical engineering degree. But since only a specific subject is specialized, growth in a company will be either very low or not up to expectation. But consider a degree in Engineering Sciences; universities offer a variety of courses and one can take up courses according to one’s liking. In the above example, a student enrolled in the engineering sciences courses can just take up a course type like chemical or metallurgy along with the other courses! So if there is not satisfactory growth they can simply switch to whatever position offers more growth!

Now, let’s get into what the opportunities are offered by an engineering sciences degree. There are a number of options. Considering a career in India, a number of options like working or research field are possible. If you want to do field work, again a number of opportunities like public sector, private sector or even government jobs. If you have an inclination and interest towards research, again options like pursuing for a PhD or being a professor or even a scientist! With a lot of opportunities and even more opportunities opening up every day and also since the number of startups are rising, career options are wide. Also, as mentioned before, since a degree in engineering sciences can opt for any field possible and thus opportunities are double the amount than a normal engineer.

Field Work Opportunities

In field work, opportunities can be from the private sector, public sector or government sector. The private sector is rapidly growing every single day with new companies formed and positions getting vacant everyday. With new startups rising and getting successful, a lot of opportunities open up for graduates from engineering sciences. Any startup, whatever field it may be, will need engineers. Other than startups, there are established successful service and product companies too. Service companies like Infosys or TCS or product companies like Google or Amazon offer a variety of roles.

Public sector companies are basically divided into two - undertaking and enterprises. These companies are to make a country self-sufficient. These include companies like HAL or BHEL. These companies need engineers from various disciplines which is an upper hand for the graduates from engineering sciences. From the Government sector, there are government companies too which need engineering graduates who are hired through competitive examinations. Getting into the Government sector means a stable and worry-free job too. In Government sectors too, a lot of opportunities for engineering science graduates. Other than working in India, a lot of opportunities are available abroad. If you have a degree from a Tier-1 university, your chances of getting a job abroad are higher.

Research

Other than field work, there are three options. The first option would be to pursue a PhD. A PhD candidate is most preferred for a job. Getting a PhD is a safe ticket to all jobs. The second option is to become a professor at a university. A teaching job is preferred by many and what better satisfaction than shaping the future generations up with our thoughts and doctrines. If this does not sound good, another option is to be a scientist. A scientist does research and brings about new inventions which brings good to the society. An engineering science graduate has knowledge of various fields, so they can become a scientist and research in their field of interest. They can work at ISRO or BARC or DRDO.

There are a great number of opportunities in each of the above-mentioned career paths. The goal is to find where your passion lies and build a profile suitable to the particular career path. Hope you find this article helpful.
